The chair of Macroeconomics, or the European Institute for International economics relations (EIIW: www.eiiw.eu), is strong in research and has attained numerous awards. Many award-winning thesis and prize-winning Habilitation (Prof. Dr. Andre Jungmittag) have emerged over the last few years; Prof. Dr. Paul J.J. Welfens himself had received prizes from Der Wolfgang Ritter Stiftung, Bremen (1996) and the International N.D. Kondratiev Foundation (2007).
Prof. Welfens is Research Fellow in IZA, Bonn; non-resident senior research fellow in AICGS/Johns Hopkins University, Washington DC; In 2007/08 he was on the Alfred Grosser visiting professorship in Sciences Po, Paris, which is a leading university and grandes écoles of France. The EIIW under the guidance of Prof. Welfens is connected to many international research partners and has contacts to many big international economic organizations. Over 30 publications, mostly written in English, have been published over the years. Publications from Prof. Welfens are available in Deutsch, French, English, Greek, Spanish, Russian und Mandarin. Prof. Welfens is co-editor of the Journal International Economics and Economic Policy. According to Springer (Publisher of scientific books), Heidelberg, Prof Welfens is one of the most highly publicized international German economist. In a press release from the International N.D. Kondratiev Foundation, Prof. Welfens said that his international team has been recognized.
The chair or the EIIW also offers guest researcher the opportunity to research and present their findings, students are able to get internships (limited positions); Prof. Welfens challenges and encourages students from abroad und views critical economics as an international force of production, which brings people together in joint problem-solving approaches, stable and sustainable globalization and increased economic integration and cooperation in the world economy are in the 21st Century important and everyone can make a contribution.

In the area of macroeconomic theory and policy/ international economic relations, our focus is on teaching and research;
• Principles of Macroeconomics
• Economic growth and employment
• Multinationals, Foreign Trade and Integration
• Structural change, innovation and the Digital Economy.
In addition to learning and research, there will be exposure to business policy and business practice, which will benefit the students. Students are expected to regularly prepare and review the course, it is also more than welcome that students read English technical texts and engage in the findings of empirical economic research.

The University of Wuppertal is part of the “Excellence Group” of the Centre for Higher Education (CHE) excellence ranking 2009. In Germany only 7 colleges and 51 universities in Europe stand out for the Masters and PhD in Economics. Based on CHE, the university of Wuppertal is “ particularly strong in research and international orientation”.
