In recent years a number of topics have been to the forefront of the policy agenda at a European Union level. These include digitalization, a process which the European Commission has compared to electrification such is its transformative effect on economies and societies more broadly. Digitalization, and the field of Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) more generally, is also one of the fields in which the EU is visible to citizens as an active agent even amongst those whose knowledge of EU policy may be relatively weak overall.
